UAE invites EOI for Mirfa 2 (M2) Independent Water Project

EWEC (Emirates Water and Electricity Company) invited bidders to submit Expression of Interest (EOI) for the development of the Mirfa 2 (M2) Reverse Osmosis (RO) Independent Water Project (IWP).

The M2 project will be located adjacent to the existing Mirfa IWPP, approximately 110 kilometres west of the city of Abu Dhabi.

The planned plant capacity will be 150 million imperial gallons per day of water and will utilize reverse osmosis technology.

The developer scope of works includes the development, financing, construction, operation, maintenance and ownership of a standalone greenfield RO seawater desalination plant with a capacity of up to 150 million imperial gallons per day of water output, together with associated infrastructure.

As per the notification, M2 will play a key role in the ongoing cost reduction initiatives in the sector through the procurement of competitive and efficient RO water desalination technology. This is part of EWEC’s wider strategic initiative of decoupling power and water generation capacity.

The expected date for starting commercial operations is Q1 2024.

The successful developer or developer consortium will own up to 40 percent of the entity while the remaining equity will be primarily held indirectly by the Abu Dhabi Government.

EWEC invites developers or developer consortiums to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) by the deadline of 4 March 2021.

EWEC’s Taweelah IWP of plant capacity 200 million imperial gallons a day (909,000 m3/d) is under construction stage. (read more)
