China Hydropower Engineering Bureau No. 10, a Subsidiary of PowerChina announces the groundbreaking ceremony for the Oman Riyah Wind Power Project, Oman’s first wind power project with oil and gas companies as the sole electricity purchaser, was held, taking a solid step towards promoting the “decarbonization and greening” of Oman’s oil and gas industry.
The Riyah Wind Power Project in Oman consists of two 100-MW sub-projects, Riyah-1 and Riyah-2, with a total installed capacity of 200 MW.
Riyah-1 is located approximately 210 kilometers northeast of Tumlet, covering an area of approximately 441 hectares at an altitude of approximately 245 meters.
Riyah-2 is located approximately 240 kilometers northeast of Tumlet, covering an area of approximately 226 hectares at an altitude of approximately 227 meters.
The project area boasts an average daily temperature of up to 40°C, dry conditions with little rainfall, and excellent wind resources (average wind speeds of 8 meters per second). It is a highly promising renewable energy corridor in the Middle East and will provide a vital support for Oman’s energy supply. Riyah-1 is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2026, and Riyah-2 in the fourth quarter of the same year.
Once operational, the project will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 740,000 tons annually and reduce natural gas consumption by 380 million cubic meters. This will provide green electricity to Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), promote the decarbonization of the traditional petrochemical industry, and help Oman achieve its “Vision 2040” and “Net Zero Emissions 2050” goals. The successful implementation of the project demonstrates PDO’s unwavering commitment and significant progress in developing renewable energy.
Earlier, during December 2024, Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) announced the signing of landmark agreements with OQ Alternative Energy (OQAE) and TotalEnergies to develop three pivotal Renewable Independent Power Producer (IPP) projects. (read more)
